A new deck is one of the best ways to get more out of your backyard, and one of the first choices you will make is the material. Wood and composite both build great decks in Northwest Florida — here is how they compare.

Pressure-Treated Wood

Wood is the classic, budget-friendly choice, and a well-built wood deck looks fantastic. The trade-off is upkeep: in our heat and humidity, wood needs periodic cleaning, sealing, or staining to keep it looking good and holding up. If you do not mind that maintenance, wood is hard to beat on value and natural look.

Composite Decking

Composite boards are made to look like wood without most of the upkeep. They resist rot, fading, and insects, and they hold up well to our sun and moisture with little more than an occasional wash. The upfront investment is higher than wood, but many homeowners like not having to reseal a deck every year or two.

How to Decide

The Frame Matters Either Way

Whichever surface you choose, the structure underneath is what keeps a deck safe and level for years — proper footings, framing, and fasteners rated for our climate. See our deck building page for how we build them to the 2023 Florida Building Code.
