Electrical problems rarely announce themselves loudly — they whisper first. Catching the warning signs early is the difference between a simple fix and a fire risk. Here’s what we tell Northwest Florida homeowners to take seriously.
Warning signs you shouldn’t ignore
- Breakers that trip repeatedly — a circuit is overloaded or something’s wrong downstream.
- Flickering or dimming lights when the AC or a big appliance kicks on.
- Warm or discolored outlets and switch plates — heat means trouble.
- A burning or “fishy” smell near outlets or the panel — stop and call now.
- Buzzing or crackling from outlets, switches, or the panel.
- Two-prong outlets and no GFCIs in kitchens, baths, or outside.
Old panels and Florida homes
If your home still has a fuse box, or a panel brand like Federal Pacific (FPE) or Zinsco, that’s worth a professional look — several older brands have known failure and fire issues. Add our Florida humidity and coastal air, and panels and connections can corrode faster than folks expect.
When to call a licensed electrician right away
Burning smells, warm panels, sparks, or anything scorched are not “watch it for a week” problems. Shut it off if you safely can and get a licensed electrician out. Electrical is not the place to gamble or DIY.
We hold electrical licensing and handle panels, wiring, generators, and safety inspections across NW Florida. If any of this sounds like your home, let’s get eyes on it.
